Jammed, Humming, or Silent
A disposal that hums but will not turn is usually jammed rather than dead. One that does nothing at all may just need resetting, or may have burned out. Either way it is a quick diagnosis.
Making It Last
Feed small amounts at a time rather than packing it full — that is what causes most jams. When it sounds clear, run cold water for another 15 to 30 seconds to flush the drain line and stop build-up further down.
Leaks Under the Sink
Disposals leak at the sink flange, the drain connection, or through the body itself. A body leak means replacement; the other two are usually repairable.
Signs You Should Call Us
- Humming with no rotation
- Nothing at all when switched on
- Water under the sink after running it
- Loud grinding or rattling

Is it worth repairing or should I replace?
Jams, reset issues and connection leaks are worth repairing. A leaking body or burnt-out motor means replacement.
What should never go down it?
Grease, fibrous scraps, bones and coffee grounds. Grease in particular is behind a lot of the drain calls we get.
