Why Main Pressure Runs So High
Water suppliers use pumps and pumping stations to keep pressure up across the network — for firefighting, for high-rise buildings, and to keep towers and supply tanks charged. That pressure is far higher than any house needs.
Where a PRV Is Required
On domestic systems where the municipal main exceeds 80 psi, a pressure reducing valve is required. Higher pressure can rupture pipes, damage fixtures and components, and injure the people using them.
They Wear Out
A PRV is a mechanical part and it fails eventually, usually gradually. If your pressure has crept up, or fixtures have started hammering and leaking without obvious cause, the valve is worth testing.
